Often when I make sculpture, I lose all track of time. The tool edge carves its path into the surface, but I am no longer there. The distinction between me and the work has vanished. During that moment, there is only the work.
Although the initial seed of my work is always rooted in ideas, my working process is entirely sensory. I become the antenna for external information. From the work itself I learn what to do next
Primitive tools and ritual objects often provide my initial inspiration. I work in multiples to find variations and combinations I might otherwise miss. My best work often happens when a piece is on the verge of being technically out of control.
My work always explores opposing forces. How can I make an object where the inside and the outside interact? Are there forms that no one has ever seen before, yet which look mysteriously familiar? Such alternating sensory impressions provide a rich visual experience. I want people to crave a second, more careful, look at the objects I create.

I gravitate toward images that reflect the beauty of God’s creation on earth, pictures that trigger curiosity, introspection, and desire to understand humanity from a different lens, a dimension that transcends the ‘normal’ spectrum while embracing unfamiliar eclectic elements. As a traveler, I love meeting new people and appreciating the intrinsic beauty that lies at the core of the human spirit. My pictures of people are intended to capture the beauty or mystery I see in them and how they positively impact me in subtle ways.
My photographic narrative entails compositions that consist of the fusion of vibrant colors, lights and shadows, landscapes, rustic elements, and images that evoke a sense of wonder, spirituality, and peace represented in people, architecture, nature, or abstract objects. I am intrigued by the depictions of depth illustrated in architecture through lighting, domes, intricate geometric patterns and calligraphy.

We are creatures of repetition. Daily routines, the movements of our limbs, and even the passing of generations repeat. My sculpture use repeated shapes to compose larger shapes. This is in fact the way nature builds, and it remains a fundamental and unexplored avenue for sculpture.

Color and laughter are important in my life. Neon provides me with a way to combine both of these elements.
I have been passionate about neon all my life - and creating neon art for the last 12 years.
I have created a number of station logo signs for XM Satellite Radio (you can see the XM building from the north windows of Art-O-Matic 2008) including Soul Street, 50's on 5, Bluesville, The Groove, and Caliente. I have also had work on display at the District Fine Arts Gallery in Washington, DC, and the Katzen Arts Center Rotunda in Washington, DC.

I started taking photos when I was 12 years old with an old Nikon of my grandfather's. I haven't put down a camera since.
Coming from a Italian-Thai background, and having grown up in Hong Kong, much of what I choose to explore photographically relates to my mixed heritage. These dolls images are digital composites of dolls of varying backgrounds that mimic my own. My paintings are an extension of this exploration and originate from photographs of my family and friends who all contribute to this global tapestry.

I want to thank the 6th grade Woodlawn Elementary students in these portraits and their parents for granting me the privilege to remind the world how important students, and education, are to our future. Thank you for being a part of this special exhibit. Thank you!
I am an art therapist working in elementary education and I believe in the importance of remembering the faces behind the goal of education policy. My recent work is a series of portraits of 39 sixth grade students in the elementary school I teach. The whole piece, at first glance, appears simple. But, each portrait of each student shows that he or she is more than his or her black and white image. Take the time to look closely… there’s a little color there too. See the depth and layers of their personalities. Get past the veil and see that they are funny, serious, thoughtful, curious… expressive. These Polaroid emulsion lifts required me to be hands on, to help mold and manually encourage each student’s intended expression to emerge. In it’s final fluid appearance, the emulsion lift is the perfect medium to convey the delicacy of our young students and their future. My active role in forming the image becomes a metaphor for the time, care and knowledge each educator uses to help their students succeed to the best of their abilities.
Now that you have a vision of these unique individuals, remember them and ask yourselves what more can we give the faces of our future?

Traveling, exploring, understanding, and celebrating the joy of being alive have always served as the heart of Eric Maring's musical life and songs. The Washington Post called him “an unwavering optimist…who believes in the power of positive music with all his heart and soul.
For over 10 years he has been sharing his love of music with people across the United States and as far as India where he recently spent a year studying tablas (drums). An accomplished guitarist and songwriter with four CDs, he has performed locally at The Birchmere , the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Kennedy Center's Millenium Stage. In 2003 he had the fortune to travel with his band Jawbone to Delhi to perform for His Holiness the Dalai Lama at the festival of Sacred Chanting and Singing.

Always involved in imagery, I have found increasing satisfaction and in visual storytelling. The nonsensical captures my attention whether it’s a moment of human behavior or part of an old fable or song. Sometimes I think of my work as books in the form of glass. It’s easy to see the influence of the graphic arts in my glass. I continue to make prints especially when the story is long. But glass holds my attention for many of the same reasons that stories about our daily life attract me: surprise, delight, humor, color, breakage, remaking and general optimism in the face of futility.

As a visual artist, I am inspired by the emotional expression of the face and the human form. I use powerful hues and surprising color schemes in acrylic paint to concentrate and distill the light and shadow of an image. Despite the overall starkness of my paintings, they are able to convey deep complexity. The bold use of line and shape characteristic of my uncomplicated style brings life to my canvases. A selection of my work has hung twice in solo shows at the Clarendon Grill in Arlington, VA.
I am also a muralist whose work appears in bedrooms, playrooms and schools across the greater Washington area. Two of my murals are on the walls at National Presbyterian School in NW, DC and several appeared in a home on the Potomac Country House Tour in Potomac, MD. I have been commissioned by individuals to create portraits of loved ones, pets and treasured images.
An art teacher for fourteen years, I have taught at several schools throughout Maryland and Washington, DC. My students’ projects have been used to create permanent displays at St. Francis Episcopal Day School in Potomac, MD, National Presbyterian School in Washington, DC, and St. Mary Catholic School in Hagerstown, MD. In 2007 I was the director of Beyond Borders, an art show featuring my elementary students who were the youngest artists ever to exhibit at the Katzen Art Center at American University. As an artist and educator, I am honored to have the opportunity to inspire children to discover more about themselves through artistic self-expression
