Sarah has been drawing for as long as she’s been able to hold a pencil. An alumna of Moore College of Art and Design and a resident of the Washington DC area, her artistic influences come from cultural mythology, visionary art and science fiction fantasy. Every piece of Sarah’s artwork is part of a larger story which has been derived from her short stories, graphic novels and personal interpretations of universal legends and folklore.

Photographer Mark Parascandola seeks to draw out the elusive harmony in uninhabitable landscapes and abandoned architecture. Last summer he traveled through northern Chile in a jeep 4x4 to photograph desert vistas, industrial ruins, and empty nomad villages. His portfolio also includes work from Spain, Argentina, the southwestern U.S., and Washington DC. He is a member of the Mid City Artists and his work has been featured at the Nevin Kelly Gallery along with other Washington DC area galleries.

My photographic collages embody movement of time, experience, memory and spatial relationships as variables captured in the scene. Each collage pieces together my observance of a place during many hours of the day, layering each photo on top of each other, thus creating a dynamic scene, engaging the viewer, allowing them to experience the poetics of space.

RICARDO PEÑUELA-PAVA
“Nos han contado un camino de rosas, pero hoy me apartaré de las sombras para reconstruir tu sueño y ver desde el infinito hacia este suelo de inmigrantes.” RP
Ricardo was born in Bogotá, Colombia in 1959. He holds a BSc degree from Universidad de los Andes, where he got involved in some art studies, which started up his formal interest on this field. He eventually moved to Europe to be trained as a scientist and at the same time registered in several visual art courses offered in Oviedo, Rome and Brighton. Ricardo also holds an MBA with a major in Human Resources Management, through a fellowship-award from the Organization of American States, OAS-PRA Program at the Interamerican University, Puerto Rico. Ricardo has also participated in art workshops held at the Museum of the Americas at OAS, in Washington, DC. His paintings have been exhibited in Bogotá; Oviedo, Spain and in the USA (Washington DC; Alexandria and Petersburg, Virginia). More recently he spends two months in Montevideo, Uruguay, training both at Sisto Pascale's Studio and at Ignacio Iturrias’ “Casablanca’s Atelier”. From September 2007 he joined Daniel Wolkof's Stained Glass Studio in Washington DC. In the last five months he developed several cultural events & visual art exhibits in DC, including one at the Embassy of Uruguay and an art workshop at the Manuel Zapata-Olivella Center, as well as a visual arts group exhibit for Cinco de Mayo Festival with Maru Montero’s Dance Co. at the National Mall, through PAVARTES.

As a graphic designer/illustrator working in the DC area for over a decade I have had the opportunity to create artwork for publications, advertising, direct mail, and other commercial outlets. As an AOM artist I want to bridge the gap of commercial and fine art in an attempt to crossover (hopefully permanently). I plan to display commercial illustrations, pencil sketches, and paintings as well as abstract artwork and personal surrealist paintings. The catalog image is an illustration created for Interactions magazine (published by AAPT 2007) and depicts physicists as journalists.

As a flash from the corner of my eye comes inspiration, in fits and starts, and only after much rumination and futzing about. I describe my work in general as whimsical and good natured, but think about something darker, more profound as I create. I miss a salon-like atmosphere not experienced in DC. The voices of discourse and witty poetry are silent these days. Out of heated debate and polite disagreement, new ideas are inspired and formed, and we exercise our minds. I seek to be motivated by these ideas, risks that someone should be taking. Where are the princes of the new world, the tragic defenders of expression, the lions of passionate discourse? The magical people that would fill the court of such leaders are waiting.

I have spent the past 2 decades creating large-scale public artworks that contribute to the urban visual landscape. This show is an opportunity to focus on my smaller works for the first time in a number of years, in the setting of my own neighborhood. My driving influences have remained the same over the years, including attention to illusionistic detail within both structural and figurative contexts.

I think of these works as sculpture. Teapots have a long history and a wide possibility for interpretation and narrowing the focus of my work has helped me expand my creative process. What once was percieved as a purely functional form is now one of seemingly endless interpretation.

tiny ghosts is mixed media photographic comic strip thingy about what it feels like to be a monster/ghost/robot/toy/etc., but not the scary kind. It's about being frightened of war and what you might turn into when you grow up if you aren't careful. It's about loss and longing and love and hope and being small and scared of a big world and not knowing your place in it and wanting to belong but always being on the outside and not being sure that God loves you but really hoping he does even though pretty much everyone else thinks you are a weirdo. Stuff like that.
