Special Notices to 2008 Participating Artists

Security at Artomatic

  • As recent news reports have documented, Artomatic has recently found that several pieces of art are missing from the event. Artomatic takes all such incidents very seriously, including so-called “pranks,” and does not endorse theft of any kind. We will be working with police to investigate these reports, which are of great concern. If you notice that any of your artwork is missing, please contact Artomatic staff ASAP.
To help deter theft, remember that no art can be removed at any time from Artomatic until deinstallation begins on Tuesday, June 17. Security will stop anyone who attempts to remove art from the building. When doing your volunteer shifts, please be alert. We know theft happens even at the biggest art museums, but we want to make sure it doesn't happen to our artists.

Contact Information

  • Please make sure that you are keeping your business cards and any promotional material in stock and only in your space (not spread around the building). Please update your Artist Catalog to include contact information - your email address, a website, a phone number. Visitors are trying to contact artists wishing to purchase their art but they can't find any information on how to contact them. Don't lose out on a potential sale or opportunity! Keep those business card holders full!

Art In Fashion Volunteers

  • The Art In Fashion Show grows bigger every day, and we are going to need extra volunteers to help set up as well as working the night of the show - Saturday, June 14th, 8 p.m. Extra shifts have been added to the volunteer calendar, if you'd like to help out please sign up! http://www.artomatic.org/volunteer

Deinstallation

Deinstallation of this year's Artomatic is going to be a huge undertaking. While we do have assistance from Miller and Long, we (the artists) will need to playing a larger role than we did for installation. Everything that we built (partitions, stages, and rooms) will have to be removed from the building before the end of June.

Therefore, in order to get the best jump on this massive project, we ask that you remove your artwork as soon as possible, preferably by the end of Sunday, June 22nd. This will clear the partitions so we can start dismantling and removing all that lumber. It all has to be carried, piece by piece, to the freight elevators and out to the loading dock.

If your artwork is not removed by Sunday the 22nd, volunteers may be asked to take down works from the partitions and place them along the outside walls. This may be necessary to insure that we live up to our agreement to vacate the building by June 30.

Reminder: Artwork can NOT leave Artomatic until after the event closes. This is written in the Terms & Conditions that all artists agreed to. Please do not remove any artwork before the show closes. Artwork can only be removed during Deinstallation - which begins on Tuesday, June 17th (new date) and ends Sunday, June 29th.

Deinstallation hours:
Tues,Wed & Thursdays: 5 p.m. - 10 p.m.
Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays: Noon - 10 p.m.

Volunteers are needed for deinstallation on Tuesdays, if you still need to complete your volunteer obligation shifts on June 17th and 24th have been added to the schedule. Please sign up!

Pecha Kucha Night

Thursday, June 12, 2008, 7:30 - 10:00p.m., 12th Floor
rsvp@capitolpechakucha.org

Pecha Kucha Night was conceived in 2003 as a place for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public.

But as we all know, give a mike to a designer (especially an architect) and you’ll be trapped for hours. The key to Pecha Kucha Night is its patented system for avoiding this fate. Each presenter is allowed 20 images, each shown for 20 seconds each – giving 6 minutes 40 seconds of fame before the next presenter is up. This keeps presentations concise, the interest level up, and gives more people the chance to show.

Pecha Kucha (which is Japanese for the sound of conversation) has tapped into a demand for a forum in which creative work can be easily and informally shown, without having to rent a gallery or chat up a magazine editor. This is a demand that seems to be global – as Pecha Kucha Night, without any pushing, has spread virally to over 100 cities across the world.

Artist Social - Take Two - Thursday Night
The first Artist Social was so successful we're having another!
Mark your calendars for the Artist Social II: Thursday, June 12, 7:30p.m.- 9:30p.m., Artomatic 11th floor.
PostSecret's Frank Warren to sign books Friday June 13

Local artist Frank Warren, the talent behind the well-known PostSecret project, will be signing copies of his books at Artomatic.

Launched at Aromatic in November 2004, PostSecret is an ongoing community art project where people mail in their secrets anonymously on one side of a homemade postcard. About 200,000 secrets have been shared. PostSecret has attracted interest from around the world, and the project’s Web site, www.PostSecret.com has been visited by millions.

Copies of one of Warren’s best selling books, which contain images of some of the many postcards he has received, will be available for purchase during the Artomatic signing events. All proceeds from the book sales benefit Artomatic.

The PostSecret signings will take be held in the Artomatic’s 11th floor store on:

  • Friday, June 13, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Visitors to Artomatic can also watch a video presentation of some of the PostSecret postcards Warren has received in the Artomatic Film and Video Theater, which is located on the ninth floor. The videos will be shown before and after the book signing.

  • WHERE -- The 11th floor, our favorite floor
  • TIME -- 9 p.m. – 2 a.m.

So, come by and celebrate the end of the show with your fellow floor neighbors. Get to know each other (if you haven't already). Everyone is invited! Bring all of your friends, and artists from other floors too, and party on the floor we all know and love. (Remember no outside alcohol, but not to worry, we have the bar on our floor!)

Floors 4-10 & 12 - feeling left out? Organize your own Special Party for your floor!

The SpeakEasy
Stop by for a mixture of poetry, music and comedy in the SpeakEasy on Friday, June 13th starting at 7pm! Saturday in the SpeakEasy kicks off at 6:30 p.m. with the acoustic version of the band Little Pink followed by poetry and spoken word until midnight.

Artomatic Needs You - Volunteer Reminder

Can't make a volunteer shift? Let us know!

If you have signed up for a volunteer shift and find you can't make it, be sure and let us know in advance. We may be able to find you a shift on another day. In a pinch, you can also send someone responsible to serve your shift for you. If you have shift problems or questions, send us an e-mail at volunteer@artomatic.org.

But please don't leave us high and dry -- this weekend quite a few folks failed to show up, which left us in a bind. Anyone who skips their shift without notifying us first may be asked to serve two additional shifts and failure to meet your required volunteer shifts may jeopardize your participation in future Artomatics.

Help keep our community arts event going!

West Elm Furniture Auction

The West Elm-furnished lounges at this year’s Artomatic have really helped class up the event. Now you can bring some of that stylish vibe home at bargain prices.

Artomatic will be auctioning off all the furniture from the West Elm-furnished lounges, with bids starting at half-off retail. The pieces include sofas, lamps, coffee tables and rugs. Stop by the lounges to check out the full selection.

The auction is only for West Elm furniture at the event, and all furniture is sold as is. Auction forms and signs go up this week and bidding closes on the last day of Artomatic, June 15. Look for auction forms at each West Elm Lounge. Great deals are to be had!
